So my total investment less SD cards in cameras the last 10 years is $25. Even then sometimes to pull the details I crank up the fill light when I edit the photos. You're better off either using flash or putting against a less bright background. High contrast is tough for cameras to cope with. One thing with a white photo box, anything dark colored will be underexposed. I just take my pictures outside, sometimes on the side of the truck, sometimes on cruddy folding tables, anything to get good sunlight. It does a good job other than the same issue of on auto it needs a few seconds to make up it's mind what to do. My J5 takes photo that are pro quality with my other lens. If you can't change the lenses, then it's more limited on what you can do with it. I can also adjust the photo on my camera settings. I can adjust the light intensity/color on the light. 4 pieces of white foam board with an LED light overhead, balanced on two slats. For the price you paid for the Nikon, you weren't far off from a good used, J5 Nikon.
